Domestic squabble over COVID 19 leads to charges when husband strangles wife

31-year-old Samuel Canuto was charged with aggravated domestic assault when an argument with his wife about seeking care for COVID 19 escalated and she said he slapped and strangled her until she lost consciousness.

On May 6th, Officers Martin and Sumnor were dispatched to a domestic situation at 3309 Tutwiler Avenue. According to the affidavit, Brittany Canuto told authorities that he husband Samuel Canuto had slapped her and strangled her until she was not conscious.

She advised that an argument had begun over Samuel seeking medical care for COVID 19 symptoms. Memphis Fire treated Brittany for injuries, she sustained bruising on her neck.

Samuel Canuto was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic assault. He was later released on his own recognizance.
