Man left in critical condition after home intruder shoots him in the back

32-year-old Glenn Smith was charged with aggravated burglary, criminal attempted second-degree murder, and possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony after he used a spare key to enter a home and then waited for the homeowner to return.

On August 15th, officers responded to a call regarding shots fired at 1510 Beaver Trail. Upon arrival, they found Samantha Wilson in the home with Elijah Lewis. Lewis who had been shot in the back was immediately transported to Regional One in critical condition and is possibly paralyzed. Wilson explained to officers they pulled up to the house a noticed the blinds move, so they both entered the home with caution thinking there may be someone inside. Wilson waited in the living room while Lewis went to scope out the spare room. Wilson heard a shot and immediately ran to the neighbor’s to call 911. She was waiting outside with her neighbor for the police to arrive when she saw her friend, Glenn Smith, walk out of the house and back in before exiting and going north on Beaver Trail. Afterward, Wilson went back inside to find that Lewis had been shot. She was later able to point out Smith as the man who left her home after the gunfire.

Officers found Smith getting out of a red Ford Mustang at Quail Covey Drive and Quail Ridge Trail. After being detained and waiving his rights, Smith told investigators that he had changed the locks at Wilson’s home approximately two months prior and held on to the spare keys. He let himself into the home around midnight and waited until about 5:00 a.m. When she didn’t return home, Smith took the handgun from her dresser drawer and returned to the spare room where he hid behind the door when he noticed Wilson and Lewis returning home.

Smith claims he surprised Lewis causing him to fire a shot, which Smith returned using Wilson’s gun. He then took both firearms and fled the scene. He confessed to the officers that he had already switch clothes and the ones he was wearing during the crime were at his home in a dirty clothes basket. He also stated that he threw the spare key out of the window near Interstate 240 and Walnut Grove, but the guns were still stashed in the Mustang.

Glenn Smith was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary, criminal attempted second-degree murder, and possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony. His bond was set at $75,000.
