Man takes air-powered rifle from stranger’s van instead of sleeping there, per report

24-year-old Jaecob Rodgers was charged with burglary and theft of property after he broke into a van for shelter to sleep, but decided to steal a Gamo pellet gun from the vehicle instead.

On November 6th, Memphis Police Officer Merrill responded to Fairfield Inn, located at 4760 Showcase Boulevard, in response to a possible burglary call. Jaecob Rodgers was located by responding officers at the corner of Perkins and American Way with a long rifle in his possession. Officers detained Rodgers and transported him to the Mt. Moriah Station. Jordan Wilks arrived at the Mt. Moriah station and told officers that his 1999 Dodge 1500 white van was burglarized.

Wilks stated that his black Gamo pellet gun was stolen. The police report stated that Wilks identified the recovered rifle to be his pellet gun that is valued at $250.00. Officers read Rodgers his Miranda Rights that he signed and agreed to give a statement to investigators. Rodgers stated that he broke into the van to sleep, but saw the pellet gun and took it instead. He admitted to officers that he was walking down Perkins and when officers saw him with the weapon, he was placed into custody.

Jaecob Rodgers was arrested and charged with motor vehicle burglary and theft of property $1,000 or less. He is currently in jail in lieu of a $7,400 bond.
