30-year-old Sherry Singh was charged with aggravated assault when she hit a homeless man in the head with a stick because he asked her to clean up after eating on the cardboard he sleeps on.
On May 26th, Memphis Police took a report from Alvin Smith who told them he had been assaulted in front of the Rio Grande Supermercado at 5110 Summer Avenue. According to the affidavit, Smith noticed two people eating on the cardboard he sleeps on. He asked them to clean up their mess to avoid rodents and pests and Sherry Singh got angry and started yelling obscenities at him.
Smith told authorities he was simply walking away to avoid conflict when Sherry smashed him on the side of his head with a stick. Sergeant Goodwin investigated and put together a photo line-up and on June 3rd Smith identified Sherry Singh as his assailant. The affidavit also mistakenly notes Sherry to be a 39-year-old man.
On June 25th, Sherry Singh was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and is jailed in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
