Whitehaven boyfriend attacks woman and her son during drunken spat

40-year-old Devene Shives was charged with aggravated burglary and two counts of domestic assault after breaking into a residence he was locked out of and then knocking down and constricting the neck of his girlfriend and her son.

On June 26th, officers received a call of a reported domestic dispute at 730 Rosebanks Rd. Upon arrival, law enforcement made contact with Berenda Moncrief, who informed officers that her boyfriend Devene Shives arrived at her residence intoxicated. Following Moncrief’s discovery of Shives’ inebriation, the man was requested to leave. Shives and Moncrief proceeded to be involved in an altercation, resulting in Shives being locked out of the home. According to the affidavit, the man responded to this by breaking the door’s window and unlocking the door to regain entry. When Shives entered the residence again, the man reportedly knocked down Moncrief by charging at her.

Brandon Moncrief, son of Berenda, observed Shives’ assault and attempted to separate the two parties. Shives then took hold of the son’s throat after the attempted intervention. Moncrief acted in self-defense of Shives’ attack by striking the man on the face and head. Shives was later transported to Methodist University hospital for medical clearance.

Devene Shives was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary and two counts of domestic assault. His bond was set at $5,000.
