Woman slams and beats puppy trapped in a tote bag

52-year-old Darla Savely was charged with cruelty to animals following a violent incident with a small puppy inside a tote bag in front of Mapco Express.

On July 11th, Memphis Police were dispatched to the Mapco Express located at 1691 Poplar Avenue after receiving a report of animal cruelty. Police spoke to William Holyfield who stated they had witnessed a woman carrying a small puppy inside a tote bag. He relayed that the woman had later slammed the bag to the ground with the puppy still inside and then repeatedly punched the bag.

The woman fled the scene abandoning the puppy in front of the gas station. When officers examined the puppy it was extremely frightened and was trembling. With the officers still on-site, the woman returned to the scene and Mr. Holyfield was able to identify her as the attacker. Memphis Animal Shelter arrived on the scene shortly thereafter in order to retrieve the puppy for further care.

On July 14th, Darla Savely was arrested on charged with cruelty to animals and her bond was set at $100.
