Memphis man caught with a firearm in a stolen car during traffic stop for expired tags

41-year-old James Wright was charged with theft of property and unlawful possession of a weapon after he was in a vehicle stopped for an expired temporary tag that was determined to be stolen.

On August 9th, Officers Tuner and Owens responded to a shooting at The Villages Apartments located at 3889 Jackson Avenue. Upon arrival, police observed an unknown male driving a silver 2019 Nissan Altima with an expired temporary tag. James Wright was identified as the passenger.

As officers detained the occupants for further investigation, they observed a brown and black 410 gauge shotgun on the passenger side floorboard with 9 shells and 1 round in the chamber. A search in NCIC also revealed the Altima to be stolen on June 15th and was valued at $25,000. Wright admitted to investigators that the shotgun belonged to him.

James Wright was arrested and charged with theft of property and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was later released on his own recognizance.
