Mental health patient attacks mother and spits in officer’s mouth

20-year-old Ashley Nichols was charged with assault, disorderly conduct, and resisting official detention after she tried to fight her mother, charged at her when police arrived, and then slipped her cuffs and spit in an officer’s mouth.

On August 13th, Officers White, Barnes, Lacey, and Rials all came to a call at 565 Holmes Road. Rhonda Nichols told police that her daughter, Ashley Nichols, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anger outbursts, and a developmental delay. Rhonda also told police that her daughter has a history of violence, and has personally assaulted her multiple times.

Ashley was found walking down the same street where she left her mother, and the officers who found her were only able to keep her calm for a short time. As her mother came to the scene, Ashley lost it and began running at her mother with a closed fist. She was quickly put to the ground and placed in handcuffs. During this exchange, Ashley received a wound on the side of her face.

While Memphis Fire Department was treating Ashley, she slipped one of her handcuffs off and began to fight officers. Ashley bit Officer Barns across his right hand, and when his PPE came off of his face she spit into his mouth. Ashley was placed back into handcuffs after officers used restraints.

Ashley Nichols was arrested and charged with assault, disorderly conduct, and resisting official detention. Her bond was set at $100.
