On September 25th, Shelby County Officers Urbanski and Salter arrived at 1496 Parkway View Circle #101 in response to a child calling the police because a person was fighting their mother. The call originated at 1498 Parkway View Circle, but officers heard a disturbance at 1496 in Apartment #101. After knocking and announcing their presence, police were met by Devonte Nichols at the door.

Nichols told police that he was in the apartment with his pregnant girlfriend, but denied officers access to the apartment or to his girlfriend, Erica Abston. Officers “made entry” and spoke with Abston, who had visible inflammation on her right cheek and a cut on the left side of her forehead. Abston told police that Nichols hit her and pushed her into a wall. She explained that one of her children called 911. Nichols was taken into custody and denied hitting Abston. He claimed the argument was only verbal.

Devonte Nichols was arrested and charged with domestic assault. His bond was set at $5,000.
