41-year-old Benjamin Townes was charged with vandalism after he smashed his mother’s windshield and taillight with a brick and ran to a nearby Firestone.
On November 12th, Memphis Police Officer Shaw arrived at Firestone, located at 1055 Madison Avenue, in response to a vandalism call from Memphis Towers Apartments. Upon arrival, Vernell McCoy advised that her son, Benjamin Townes, woke up upset that morning while they were staying at a friend’s house, at 1031 Court Avenue.
Vernell stated Benjamin began throwing items and when they left the apartment, he took the stairs as she went down in the elevator. She reported that once she was outside, there was damage to the windshield and taillight of her 2017 Hyundai Elantra. According to Vernell, Benjamin admitted to throwing a brick at her car and proceeded to run away to a close-by Firestone.
She informed the officer that her son was diagnosed with bipolar schizophrenia and was unmedicated. Further investigation also revealed a warrant for Benjamin in Georgia.
Benjamin Townes was arrested and charged with vandalism. He is currently jailed in lieu of a $500 bond.
