Fugitive caught with 7.2 grams marijuana after stealing 2017 Camaro

19-year-old Deshun Bates was charged with theft of property, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of marijuana after he reportedly stole a Chevrolet Camaro and the gun inside the vehicle, then switched to another car with 7.2 grams of marijuana.

On November 25th, Memphis Police arrived at 7948 Winchester Road in response to a report of a stolen 2017 Chevrolet Camaro. The owner, Detra Tate, stated she left her key fob and a Glock 43 9mm handgun in the vehicle when she went into Kroger. The officers then tracked the Camaro with the active On-Star to Hollyford Apartments, located at 6490 Country Oaks Circle.

According to the affidavit, Deshun Bates exited the white Camaro and jumped into a black Camaro. After he was detained, the police found the key fob and gun in the backseat where he was sitting. A further search of the vehicle revealed a bag and a mason jar containing 7.2 grams of marijuana in the passenger seat. The 2017 white Chevrolet Camaro was also noted to be worth $20,387. A search through the system showed that Deshun was on diversion for theft of property as of November 27, 2019, and he also had a warrant where the diversion had been revoked as of September 24, 2020.

Deshun Bates was arrested and charged with theft of property, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of marijuana. He is currently jailed in lieu of a $31,500 bond.
