Stepfather and son square off with a fork and knife

57-year-old Melvin James was charged with domestic assault when he and his stepfather got into an argument about his girlfriend and then stepped out of the house with weapons to avoid making a mess inside.

On September 5th, Shelby County Sheriff dispatched Officer Dames to a domestic assault reported at 3258 Yale Street. Ladell Jackson advised officers that his stepson, Melvin James, confronted him inside his house about in regard to Melvin’s girlfriend. Ladell stated that Melvin threatened him so picked up a fork, and walked out of the house so that he wouldn’t mess up the house. He advised officers that Melvin picked up a knife and followed him outside. Ladell told police that when he saw the knife he dropped the fork in his hand.

When Officer Dames spoke with Melvin, he stated that Ladell attempted to stab him with the fork, but it didn’t connect. Then when Ladell dropped the fork he slapped him in the face causing him to fall. Ladell completed the forms for a domestic violence hold but refused medical attention.

Melvin James was arrested and charged with domestic assault. He was later released on his own recognizance.
