Teen shooter charged after being shot in firefight and providing police with written statement

19-year-old Darriun “BigDawg Choppa” Baker was charged with aggravated assault and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony after leaning out of a car window to shoot at someone and endangering innocent bystanders.

On October 11th, Memphis Police officers reported to the area of Bent Tree Apartments in response to a shooting call. Reportedly, Darriun Baker was in the backseat of a white Chevrolet Impala, and spoke with an unknown male in a gray car that was entering the apartment. Precious Smith, who was not involved, was trying to enter the gate, but couldn’t because the unknown male in the gray car was stopped in front of her. When the car Baker was in pulled onto the street, Baker leaned out and fired several shots at the gray car.

The unknown male then returned fire. Both Baker and the male fired multiple rounds at each other with Precious directly in between them.

On October 16th at Raines Station, Precious gave a written statement recalling everything from that day. She also positively identifying Baker in a six-person photo lineup. Precious stated she thought she was “Going to die.” Later, Baker came to the station and admitted, in a written statement, to shooting at the person in the gray car with a pistol.

Darriun Baker was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. He was released on a $10,000 bond.
