Woman charged after fatally striking a pedestrian with her vehicle

27-year-old Shakourya Dickerson was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death and duty to give information and render aid after reportedly striking 57-year-old Luz Sanchez Acevedo with her car as she attempted to cross the street.

On November 20th, Memphis Police Sergeant Potts was assigned as the Special Traffic Investigation Squad Lead Investigator on a fatal hit and run pedestrian crash at Lamar Avenue and South Barksdale Street. The investigation revealed that Shakourya Dickerson was traveling eastbound on Lamar Avenue in a silver 2014 Nissan Altima and struck Luz Sanchez Acevedo with her front bumper as she attempted to cross the street.

She then left the scene of the incident without stopping to check on her. Per the affidavit, Shakourya returned home and told her parents, who promptly called the police. Uniform Patrol Officers arrived at her residence and transported her to the Traffic Division at 3430 Austin Peay Highway. Shakourya invoked her right not to give a statement.

Shakourya Dickerson was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death and duty to give information and render aid. She was later released on a $5,000 bond.
