Police say man continues to ‘wreak havoc’ on downtown merchants

42-year-old Michael Jones was charged with criminal trespass and theft of property after he stole food from Family Dollar and brazenly ate it on the bench outside multiple days in a row.

On October 10th, Memphis Police Officers Demuth and Southerland responded to a shoplifter at the Family Dollar located at 49 South Main Street. The officers encountered Michael Jones who had been identified as someone who continued to “wreak havoc” on the merchant community of downtown Main Street. Natalie Scruggs, the manager, stated that Jones came inside the store and aggressively took assorted food items, passed the register, and exited the store.

Scruggs told officers that Jones stole food daily and would even sit outside of the store and brazenly ate the items. Officers advised Jones multiple times in the past not to return to the store. The stolen items with an estimated value of $13.43 were photographed. Jones was barred from the store by the Blue Suede Brigade member, Terrance Miller, due to Jones’ constant stealing and terrorizing of customers.

Michael Jones was arrested and charged with criminal trespass and theft of property. He is currently jailed in lieu of a $500 bond.
